I played both games many times , cause I loved them. They were not linear but the past few titles has been. I am pissed off that a few review videos I watched about this game claimed they went back to the way FF7 and FF9 use to be , thats why I bought it.. Aside from nearer to late-game parts, most did not have any type of open worldness to them, aside from maybe being able to access the occasional area with monsters way more powerful than you and hitting artificial walls in that way.

And Sometimes, you get an air ship way later and can even goto the moon sometimes lol, it happened. Not hating, just saying. It really has never been all that open. Truly non linear games are very rare.

Only a few open world rpgs such as Morrowind, and the latest Zelda game are the only examples that come to mind right now. Most games are still linear even if they have freedom of exploration, there is a progression curve in the games' story that must in most case be followed step by step. The presence of an overworld adventure map with random battles shouldn't be the deciding factor.

Exacty , I agree there was always a obsticale , but they looked more open years ago. FF9 to me was a perfect example. No they were not true open world that modern day hack and slash games has. Chrono Trigger was my first Jrpg and still one of my favorites , which was gates and time travel , but it had small world map areas that had a cave a dungeon a few towns with inns , pubs, buildings. To me that was one of the many elements that made Jrpgs what they are.. I wish I loved to just fight all the time , because the gaming world is full of FPS.
